Each year of the curriculum begins with an overarching unit focusing on different aspects of the inquiry process, including the role of questions and concepts (9th grade); the process of designing investigations (10th grade); and evidence as the explanation for models (11th grade). Then, at each grade level, students cover three eight-week core units devoted to physical science, life science, and earth and space science. Each unit includes initial lessons focusing on science concepts as well as an integrating chapter that ties these concepts to the natural world (Bybee, 2006).

Teachers did complain that the lesson seemed to “go over the same thing over and over and over,” she recalls.
