It was not a little part of his ability to be a symbol that he changed his place of work from conservative Louvain to a Basel which grew more hostile towards conservatives during the time that he resided there. But it was not his place that mattered most. It was because he was recognized everywhere as a scholar of international fame. His personal history mattered to the rare psychology which is found in the mature adult. The son of a Dutchman who could not marry his woman because he was related to her within the prohibited degrees, and so illegitimate by birth, he was likely to think from childhood that the rules of the Church were not perfect.

Pico della Mirandola was an Italian humanist and on his travels met and was influenced by a Spanish Jewish convert to Christianity. From this source he ‘discovered’ the cabbala. He accepted the belief that there was no more convincing proof of the godhead of Christ (outside the Christian revelation) than that which was derived from the cabbala and its mysterious knowledge. He found there the Trinity, and the Incarnation, and the godhead of the Messiah, and the idea of original sin, and reconciliation through the grace of Christ, and demons and angels, and purgatory and hell.

In all Protestant editions of the Bible the Greek books were placed together at the end of the Old Testament, and within a few years were given the title The Apocrypha, with the definition that these books are not to be counted as part of Holy Scripture but are useful and good to read. 7 Migne, Patrologia Latina, . ff. The Bible  This was helpful. In the Vulgate for example the books of Daniel and Esther have Greek additions which do not edify. It did not mean that printers produced the Bible without the Apocrypha.
