Chace follows his personal trip from undergraduate schooling at Haverford university to instructing at Stillman, a historically African-American university in Alabama, within the Sixties, to his days as a professor at Stanford and his appointment as president of 2 very diverse institutions--Wesleyan collage and Emory collage. Chace takes us with him via his a long time in education--his expulsion from university, his boredom and confusion as a graduate pupil in the course of the unfastened Speech stream at Berkeley, and his involvement in 3 contentious circumstances at Stanford: on tenure, curriculum, and educational freedom. whilst readers keep on with Chace on his journey to reformatory after he joins Stillman scholars in a civil rights protest, it truly is transparent that the guidelines he provides are born of expertise, no longer preached from an ivory tower. The e-book brings the reader into either the school room and the executive place of work, portraying the original value of the previous and the unusual rituals, rewards, and problems of the latter. even if Chace sees a lot to lament approximately American greater education--spiraling expenses, elevated consumerism, overly competitive institutional self-promotion and advertising, the corruption of intercollegiate activities, and the depression kingdom of the humanities--he unearths extra to compliment. He issues specifically to its power and power, suggesting that this is often sustained if greater schooling continues to be real to its function: supplying a humane and helpful schooling, contained in the lecture room and out, for America's destiny generations.
