However, unlike Schopenhauer and Plato, whom Nietzsche knew well, his firsthand knowledge of Kant appears to have been slight.

This move away from philology corresponded well with Nietzsche’s plans— admittedly only for a brief period of time—to write his dissertation in philosophy instead of philology. ”75 Both themes were inspired by his reading of Schopenhauer and Lange, both of whom dealt with these questions in some detail, and many of these notes were excerpts from Lange’s book. There is no doubt that Lange constituted a strong influence on the young Nietzsche and that Nietzsche read him intensively in 1866 and 1868.

Nietzsche’s reading of Schopenhauer also strongly improved and influenced his interest and knowledge of general philosophy and the history of philosophy. Schopenhauer continually discussed philosophical questions and other philosophers’ views throughout his works. 50 However, along with Nietzsche’s many enthusiastic notes and comments about Schopenhauer in letters, we also find a number of connected notes, covering about ten published pages and written sometime between the autumn of 1867 and early 1868, in which Nietzsche severely criticizes Schopenhauer’s philosophy.
