Look just above the object in the field of view and you will see fainter objects and more detail in brighter objects. ” I started with the Messier list and added the best of the NGC and created an observing list. Then I made myself really spend some time with each of these goodies until I had a good observation that really defined what I could see. I used binoculars, my finder scope, a variety of filters and magnification. It left me realizing that there was more to see if I spent the time to really observe and not just glance into the eyepiece.

It is very faint, pretty large for a planetary and is brightest on the north side. This is on a great night that I rated S = 6, T = 8. On a night that was too poorly attended to be a star party (just the Nexstar 11 and me), this is an obvious nebula with stars involved. At 125X it was pretty bright, pretty large but not brighter in the middle. There are four stars involved, three of 10th or 11th magnitude; the faintest of these stars is 13th magnitude. 5X1 with direct vision, but it appears almost round with averted vision.

Most of the bright spots are star clusters and the dark areas are these carbon clouds called dark nebulae. One of the largest and most prominent of these areas starts in Cygnus then spreads through Aquila and into Scutum. It is called the Great Rift, with good reason.
