Hence, the process of ‘silencing’ male rape victims and rendering the phenomenon invisible is precisely what indicates male rape as key to governmentality. This process, of necessity, draws on the old, formally discredited, myths relating to victim precipitation and culpability – and surreptitiously re-legitimizes them. Furthermore it reinforces the gendered script that fosters and necessitates this imperative: hegemonic masculinity. Consequently, rather than taking historic examples to illustrate the normality of male rape, or indeed current examples to problematize rape Problematization – A Critical Ontology of the Present 33 myths, I argue that what we should attend to is the discursive regularity here – over time – in terms of our understanding of male rape (or more accurately those situated historical forms of sexual/ized violence against the male that are the forerunners of the male rape construct).

These micro sites are significant as the foundation for the macro processes of political and politicized societal ‘realities’.

In this sense it is inherently underpinned by notions of a ‘just-world’,4 a rationalization that one’s fate is righteous and that – in essence – people ‘get what they deserve and deserve what they get’ (Anderson and Doherty, 2008, p. 34). This draws on and reinforces the notion of a moral balance, lending credence to the notion that – if one’s fate is both just and deserved – one has ultimate control, and ultimate responsibility. As a rationale, the just world thesis is underscored by Othering, which at its simplest enables populations to be reassuringly divided into: those to whom bad things happen because they deserve it (them) and those to whom nothing bad can happen because they don’t deserve it (us) – thus enabling defensive attribution, and intrinsically (re) validating victim blaming.
