Bombaci, born in 1914, had studied with Professor Luigi Bonelli and assumed this position at the Institute when the professor retired. Although Bombaci was interested in languages and literatures, he did not despise history. In fact, in 1936 he had already begun to study the Ottoman documents kept in the Fondo Mediceo of the State Archives in Florence. During World War II, he began, but never completed, studying the Venetian papers. In 1956, he published an important work about Turkish literature, Storia del/a /etteratura turca, also translated into French; his last book was a history of pre-Ottoman and Ottoman Turkey up to 1453.

Bombaci had not seen these papers, and I prepared their summaries together with Zoran Ladic who helped me with three documents written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Working on file No. 1 was a struggle, since its papers had been left in a muddle in a clumsy attempt to file the papers as "documents with translations", ''without translation" and ''Italian originals" made by Aureliano Lanza. However, at long last, I succeeded in re-creating the original order. The present catalogue begins from the summaries made by Alessio Bombaci, as shown in the following list of contributors: Alessio Bombaci 4, 8, 14, 17, 19, 23, 35, 37, 44, 49, 51, 53, 57, 5961,64-66,69,72,75-77,90-91,95,97, 100, 103-104, 107-108, 112, 114, 116, 118, 123, 125, 127, 130, 134-138, 140, 151, 153, 155, 158, 160, 162, 165-166, 168, 171, 173-176, 180-181, 184, 186, 188, 191, 193, 195, 199,201,203,205,207-208,210,212-215,217,219,221,223,225,227, 236-238, 240, 242-246, 249, 251-254, 256, 257-258, 263, 265-267, 269273, 275, 277-278, 280-283, 288-289, 291-292, 296-297, 299, 301, 303305, 307-308, 310, 319-323, 325-326,328-330, 333-339, 341, 343, 345347, 349, 351, 354, 358-359, 361, 365-366, 368, 370, 373-375, 377-378, 380-386, 388-391, 393, 395-399, 402-403, 405-407, 409-412, 414-415, 418-420,422,424-426,428-431,433,436,438,443,446,448,452,456, 51 ASVe, Secreta, Indict, reg.

Other documents deal with official envoys sent to Venice by the sultan or by important court officials, such as the interpreters Yunus and :ibrahim, the silihtar Bali aga, and Kubad {:aVU§. While studying these documents, one realizes for instance that the gifts laid at the doge's feet by the envoys of provincial authorities are usually much richer than those sent by the sultan himself. Lastly, there are letters written by beylerbeyis andfethnames such as the one sent to Venice in 1597 describing the conquest of Eger (No.
