Under the terms of its license to operate, the network company was not permitted (at that time) to sell its services directly to the market, so in 1984 Vodac Limited was formed as its service provider. Later in 1987 Vodata Limited was formed to offer a range of value-added services, such as voice mail, and in October 1987 Vodapage Limited was launched to offer a national paging service. By 1988 Racal Vodafone was demonstrating market success and had achieved profitability, accounting for one-third of Racal’s profits.
