From the beginning, the program operated on “soft” money: for the first three years on campus funds supplemented by grants from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education, at that time headed by Virginia Smith.

Students often went on country outings and ski trips together. Personal concern for others in the class led to personal interest in their work. The warmth this brought added meaning to the student’s own work. ” Once a week the entire membership of the program met to discuss problems of mutual interest. Students had important responsibility for formulating policy on such topics as admissions, recruitment of faculty, and uniformity in grading. The substantial regular communication among the program faculty (in which associates and professors had absolutely equal status), team teaching, the overlapping of periods of service, and of course shared responsibility for the program, indispensable to the development of the teaching method, also generated an unusual degree of affection.

Since real life is interdisciplinary, the seminars would use interdisciplinary resources, including team teaching by faculty from different fields. We wanted, of course, to introduce the students to the methods of inquiry, the “stance,” the intellectual styles of the various disciplines.
