Annas 1981: 127. Sorabji (1993: 9-12) argues that, in contrast to Aristotle, Plato does generally grant animals not only beliefs but also a reasoning part of the soul. He does, however, admit that Resp. 441 a-b is one of the exceptions. The translation is based on Lee. This passage is discussed in detail on pp. 228-9 below. The thumos in the Republic 21 there may still be a very early stage in the child's life when he or she cannot respond to reason at all, even indirectly. This latter possibility is clearly even more acute when we consider the notion of thumos in animals.
