In 1860, the California legislature formed a geological survey under Josiah D. Whitney. The Whitney Survey began a geological study of California, but when its first reports appeared with “academic,” rather than “practical geology,” it was slowly starved for funds and its work soon ceased (McPhee, 1998, p. 474). S. Geological Survey in the 1880s and 1890s. Several workers, principally W. Lindgren, H. W. Turner, and J. S. Diller, mapped much of the Sierra Nevada. It has been said that these geologists worked mostly from horseback, completing a 30 minute quadrangle in two field seasons—a formidable achievement.
