It was developed from Wernher von Braun’s Redstone rocket. The Saturn V was enormous, standing 363 feet (111 m) high and weighing, at takeoff, 6,423,000 pounds (2,913,500 kg). Everything about the rocket was big. The five F-1 engines in the first stage produced about 7,650,000 pounds (3,470,000 kg) of thrust. It sucked about 3 tons (3 metric tons) of fuel and oxidizer every second from their massive tanks. This was forty times the power of the rocket that had launched Alan Shepard into space. Collins pressed a switch, and the two spacecraft gently parted.
