Epiphysis. When vertebral physes are open, the ventral aspect of the vertebra has an irregular, jagged margin (Figure 3-5). CERVICAL SPINE There are seven cervical vertebrae, and the variation in size and shape of individual cervical vertebrae is greater than in any other spinal region. The first cervical vertebra, the atlas, articulates with the occipital condyles at the atlanto-occipital articulation. There is no intervertebral disc between the occipital condyles and the atlas. The atlanto-occipital articulation provides for flexion and extension but not lateral or rotary movement; thus, this joint has been referred to as the yes joint.

Suboptimally positioned lateral views can give the false impression of soft palate thickening. The soft palate lying in the dorsal Figure 2-14. Intraoral radiograph of the maxilla of an 8-monthold mixed breed dog. Radiographic film in a slim vinyl cassette containing standard intensifying screens has been placed diagonally in the mouth and a dorsoventral image acquired. The mandible will not be included in a radiograph made in this fashion, allowing an unobstructed view of the nasal cavity. Most nasal cavity disorders are unilateral, and side-to-side comparison is readily possible in this view.

Figure 3-2. Diagram illustrating the effect of divergence of the x-ray beam on radiographic disc space width. The gray shaded area represents the diverging x-ray beam. The dotted lines represent x-ray photons that will strike four adjacent intervertebral disc spaces. The vertical photon will pass through the central disc space, and the image of the disc space will be representative of the actual size of the disc space. Farther peripherally, to the reader’s left, the photon becomes more angled with reference to the disc space, which leads to an image of the disc space that is narrower than its actual width and not representative of the true size of the disc space.
