The next year, in Wisconsin, Democrats swept to victory by opposing a state law requiring Lutheran and Catholic parochial schools to use English in their classrooms. In Nebraska, as in Iowa, Democratic candidates gained support among Catholics, German Lutherans, and others who opposed nativist or prohibitionist initiatives. In 1888, the Democrats of Nebraska won majorities in only a handful of counties, all of them strongly opposed to prohibition, all with large proportions of Irish, Germans, Czechs, or Poles.
